Why Club Fees Look Different This Year — And What You're Actually Paying For?

Dear North State Families,

As we roll out our updated club-wide fee structure, we’ve received a common question from parents:
“Why does it seem like the cost is higher this year?”

The honest answer is: it’s not actually more expensive.
What is different is the transparency. You’re now seeing the full cost of what it takes to run a competitive soccer team for a full season—upfront and in one place.

In the past, you paid a base registration fee and were often asked throughout the year to contribute to tournaments, referee fees, team equipment, video, and more—typically coordinated by team parents and coaches. That made the real cost easy to underestimate.

We’ve now centralized and standardized the process so all players and families have a consistent, predictable experience—and coaches can focus on coaching, not accounting.

What It Really Costs to Operate a Team

Below is a rough per-player estimate based on a 15-player team. These figures reflect actual expenses covered by the club for each player over the course of a full season (Fall + Spring):

Category Cost per Player (Est.)

Practice Fields $308.00

League Fees $33.33

Tournaments $166.67

Veo Video Access $133.33

Equipment $66.67

Game Scheduling/Fields $146.67

Insurance $35.00

Referees $106.67

Club Operations (admin, support, maintenance) $80.00

Estimated Total: $1,076.34 per player

This is what it takes just to cover the minimum cost of operating each team—no frills, no extras.

How We Keep Soccer Affordable

Thanks to club-hosted events and fundraisers, like Wild West Night, 3 Shastas, and SMASH Cup, we raise an additional $60,000–$70,000 per year. These funds help us:

  • Cover major club-wide costs

  • Keep field and referee expenses down

  • Avoid passing large operational costs onto families

  • Keep registration fees more affordable for everyone

This model means your player benefits even if your team doesn’t directly participate in those events.

What’s Changing This Year

Here’s what to expect as we move forward with this new structure:

  • All budgets are managed by the club, not by individual teams.

  • Coaches are no longer responsible for fundraising or financial tracking. Their focus is back where it belongs: player development.

  • Every player is required to wear the official club practice uniform, available on our club store. This is covered by the club and reinforces a unified identity.

  • Small team fundraisers are no longer permitted (raffles, prize-based drawings, etc.). Instead, we encourage families and teams to help support large-scale events that benefit everyone.

If your team is interested in helping out with any of the club’s major events, let us know! We’re always looking for parent volunteers, especially for tournaments and fundraisers that help fuel the club’s success.

We’re Committed to Transparency

Before BYGA registration opens, we will be emailing all families again with more details about the new model.
We’ve also redesigned the club website to make communication easier and ensure you have access to clear, accurate information when you need it.

This change is all about building something sustainable, professional, and consistent—for players, parents, and coaches alike.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to explain how the process works and how your investment supports your child’s development and experience.

Thank you for being part of the North State Soccer community.

North State Soccer Competitive Program FAQ & Policy Guide

Tryouts

What are tryouts and why do you hold them?
Tryouts allow us to assess a player’s maturity, soccer IQ, and technical ability. Players who demonstrate the skills and mindset necessary for competitive play may be invited to join a team.

Do I need to register for tryouts?
Yes. All players must register for tryouts in advance.

Is there a fee to attend tryouts?
No. Tryouts are free of charge, but registration is required.

When and where are tryouts held?
Tryouts are typically held in May/June. Exact dates and locations are posted on the homepage of the North State Soccer website. Players may also contact their age group coach for evaluation year-round. Please arrive early to check in.

What if my child can’t attend all tryout sessions?
Players should attend as many tryout sessions as possible. If unavailable, contact the team coach to arrange an alternative evaluation.

What if my child is injured and cannot try out?
If your child is injured, contact the coach. Returning injured players may not be required to try out if the coach waives it.

What should players wear to tryouts?
Soccer-appropriate gear including cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, athletic wear, and a properly inflated ball.

What age group should my child try out for?
Teams are formed by calendar year ("age pure"). Players may request to try out for an older age group, but not a younger one. No player will be allowed to play up unless they are evaluated and selected for their birth year team first. See our Operating Documents for more.

How many teams are there per age group?
North State Soccer strives to field multiple teams per age group, competing at different levels based on player ability and competition level.

Will my child receive feedback after tryouts?
All players will be contacted by a coach or the Director of Coaching via phone or email regarding their status. Additional feedback may be requested.

What are the costs if my child makes a team?
Club registration is $300 per player. Team fees vary by age and level but typically range from $300–$600 and cover items like field rental, tournaments, and equipment.

Are scholarships available?
Yes. Please email president@reddingsoccer.com to discuss scholarship opportunities.

How much travel is involved?
Most teams play in the NorCal Premier League. League matches (8–10 per season) are typically played against teams from the Sacramento region. Coaches aim to schedule double-headers to reduce travel. Teams also participate in 2–3 tournaments per season, typically in Northern California or Southern Oregon.

What if my child isn’t ready for competitive soccer?
Our Academy Program runs each Spring and Fall and is designed to help players build foundational skills before joining a competitive team.

Tournaments

Competitive teams participate in multiple tournaments each season. Tournament fees are included in team budgets. Please anticipate additional personal travel costs (hotels, meals, etc.).

Player Responsibilities

Players are expected to attend all practices and games, follow instructions, and display good sportsmanship. Disrespectful behavior, defiance, abusive language, or physical altercations may lead to removal from practice or games, suspension, or removal from the team.

Player Code of Conduct:

  • Play for fun and development.

  • Respect the rules, referees, coaches, and teammates.

  • Control your temper—no retaliation or arguing.

  • Focus on your performance, effort, and team contribution.

  • Cheer good plays—yours and your opponent’s.

  • Represent your team, family, and club with class.

Kaos/Missfits Official Uniform Kits

North State Soccer's official supplier is Adidas, with custom-designed kits available only through our online store. The required kit includes:

  • 2 Jerseys (Red & White)

  • 2 Shorts (Black & Red)

  • 2 Socks (Red & White)

All uniforms feature the Kaos/Missfits crest, player number, and North State branding. Optional gear (bags, warmups, practice shirts, fan gear) is also available in the store.

Parent Responsibilities

Parents are vital to creating a positive soccer experience. Concerns should be addressed directly with the coach (never during a game). If unresolved, contact the Division Coordinator for support.

Parent Code of Conduct:

  • Support your child without pressure.

  • Let the kids play—don’t coach from the sideline.

  • Teach respect, hard work, and teamwork.

  • Applaud all good play—regardless of team.

  • Respect referees and club volunteers.

  • Set a positive example at all times.

  • Allow field marshals or staff to handle conflicts.

Failure to follow this code may result in disciplinary action by the club, including suspension from attending games.

Respect for Referees

Referees, including youth refs, deserve respect at all times. Mistakes will happen, but public criticism or questioning of referees is strictly prohibited. Disrespect toward officials may result in removal from the match or disciplinary action.

If a referee’s performance is concerning, coaches may submit feedback through the proper club channels—not during or immediately after the game.

Zero Tolerance Policy

Negative comments, arguing with referees, or displays of dissent from coaches, players, or spectators are unacceptable. These behaviors are in violation of US Club Soccer's Code of Conduct and contribute to the ongoing referee shortage.

Consequences may include:

  • Ejection from the game or facility

  • Match termination

  • Suspension from games or seasons

  • Review by the Board of Directors

All members of our club community are expected to uphold the spirit of the game and support a safe, fun, and respectful environment for players and officials.
